Cross recessed tapping screws are small parts and still they end up carrying a big role in many products. Most people never think about the screws inside a machine or electrical board, but industries rely on them every day. Because these screws create their own thread when driven into a material, their performance needs to be accurate. Any mistake in shape, strength or recess can cause big problems later

This is why India now regulates these screws under the IS 18480 series. If a company wants to sell them in the Indian market they must have the BIS ISI mark. The certification proves the screws follow the right dimensions and mechanical properties mentioned in the standard. So this article walks through the essential details what the standard covers, why the certification is mandatory and how manufacturers or importers can get it.

What These Screws Actually Are

Cross recessed tapping screws are designed to cut or form threads when driven into a base material. The “cross recessed” part simply means the head has that cross-shaped indentation for the screwdriver. This helps reduce slipping and gives a cleaner drive.

You’ll usually find these screws in things like:

  • Appliances
  • Metal frames
  • Electrical panels
  • Furniture pieces
  • Light mechanical assemblies

IS 18480 splits these screws into parts depending on the head style. For example, one part covers pan head, another one covers countersunk (flat) head, and another part covers raised countersunk. The idea is that each head type has its own measurements and tolerances, so BIS checks them separately.

What IS 18480 Really Covers

The standard is detailed but the main things it touches are pretty straightforward. It lists the dimensions, the allowed tolerances, the thread type, the shape of the recess, the mechanical performance and the surface finish

A few important points from the standard include:

  • The screw must match the exact measurement for head height and diameter
  • The cross recess must be accurate so the screwdriver grips properly
  • The threads need to follow the correct pitch and depth
  • Material must meet strength levels so the screw doesn’t break when driven
  • Surface coating (like zinc plating) should protect against corrosion

Why BIS Certification Became Mandatory

The government’s Quality Control Order (QCO) brought these screws into the compulsory list. It means no manufacturer or importer can sell cross recessed tapping screws in India unless they are ISI-marked.

A few reasons behind this move:

  • Too many sub-standard screws were entering the Indian market.
  • Failures in electrical panels or machinery were traced back to poor screws.
  • Industries needed uniform quality since these fasteners are used everywhere.

So, the ISI mark now acts like a quality stamp. Buyers know they are not dealing with a weak or poorly made screw.

Who Must Get the Certification

This requirement doesn’t only apply to large factories. It pretty much covers everyone in the supply chain unless the screws are for export.

It applies to:

  • Indian manufacturers
  • Foreign manufacturers exporting screws to India
  • Importers selling under their own brand
  • Distributors who repackage screws

Why the ISI Mark Helps Manufacturers Too

Many manufacturers see certification as a chore, but it has benefits. It reduces disputes, prevents returns, and improves trust among buyers. Government departments and industrial clients prefer certified fasteners.

In some sectors like electronics and electrical boards, companies have made ISI-marked screws mandatory for procurement. So, certification can actually open more opportunities.

How the Certification Process Works.

The process has a few stages and none of them should be skipped. It’s a step-by-step flow, and BIS usually keeps the pattern the same for all fastener categories

1. Application Filing

Manufacturers submit details about the product range, screws, head types, coatings, and material. BIS checks whether the documents match the standard.

2. Factory Audit

A BIS officer visits the manufacturing unit. They examine machines, tooling, gauges, testing setup, heat treatment (if any), and quality control records. They also confirm the plant layout and batch-wise tracking

3. Sample Picking and Testing

During the visit BIS picks random samples. These are sent to an approved laboratory for testing. The lab checks dimensions, thread accuracy, recess shape, torsion strength and plating thickness.

4. Test Report Evaluation

If all the results match the requirements of IS 18480, BIS moves ahead with the licence.

5. Licence Grant

The manufacturer gets the BIS licence and can print the ISI mark on packaging. The licence must mention the correct part of IS 18480.

6. Ongoing Surveillance

BIS can visit again anytime. Renewal depends on consistent quality and proper recordkeeping.

Marking and Packaging Rules

Each certified screw (or its packaging, if printing on the screw is not possible) needs the following:

  • ISI logo
  • BIS licence number
  • Standard number (IS 18480)

Conclusion

Cross recessed tapping screws under IS 18480 need to be reliable. Since they form their own threads, any flaw can cause a loose joint or even damage the material. With mandatory BIS certification, the market now follows a more controlled and safer system.

For manufacturers or importers getting the ISI mark is not only a legal requirement but also a sign of quality. The process takes effort but once approved, it improves trust, compliance and customer confidence
