Eligibility Criteria for MSME Registration

The eligibility criteria for MSME registration in India was last updated on July 1, 2020. This revision introduced a unified classification for both manufacturing and service enterprises on the basis of combined investment in plant and machinery,  and annual turnover.

A new enterprise's classification as a micro, small, or medium enterprise shall be based on the following criteria:

 

Micro Enterprises

  • Investment in plants and machinery should not exceed more than one crore rupees.
  • Turnover should not exceed five crore rupees.

 

Small Enterprises

  • Investment in plants and machinery should not exceed ten crore rupees only.
  • Turnover should exceed fifty crore rupees.

 

Medium Enterprise

  • Investment in plants and machinery should not exceed more than Fifty Crore Indian Rupees Only.
  • Turnover should not exceed two hundred and fifty crore rupees.
     

Documents Required for MSME Registration

Following are the documents which are required for MSME Registration:

 

Aadhaar Card

  • Aadhar Card of proprietor is required for a proprietary firm.
  • For any other company, LLP, Society, or Trust Aadhar Number of the Authorized Signatory is required

 

PAN Card of the business or individual

  • Similar to Aadhar Card, for a Proprietary firm PAN Card of Proprietor is required.
  • For any other Company, LLP, Society, or Trust, PAN Card of the Organization is required

 

GSTIN (if registered under GST)

 

NIC Code – defines nature of business (manufacture, service, trading, etc.)

 

Proof of Business Address like Utility Bill, Electricity Bill, or Rent Agreement

 

Bank Account details

  • Account Number
  • IFSC Code
  • Copy of Bank Passbook or Cancelled Cheque

 

Total investment in plant & machinery or equipment

MSME Registration Process in India

Applicants are supposed to follow the below steps for MSME Registration Process in 2025:

 

Step 1: Visit the Udyam registration website.

 

Step 2: On the homepage, click the option 'For new entrepreneurs who are not registered yet as MSME”

 

Step 3: Fill the 'Aadhaar Number' and the 'Name of Entrepreneur,' then select the 'Validate & Generate OTP' button.

 

Step 4: An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with the Aadhaar card. Then enter the OTP and click on the 'Validate' button.

 

Step 5: Once the Aadhaar is validated then proceed to the PAN verification page. Enter the 'Type of Organisation' 'PAN' number, and click the 'Validate' button.

 

Step 6: The Udyam registration application form will appear. Fill in all the required details like the name of the entrepreneur, mobile number, name of the enterprise, location of the plant, address of the enterprise, status of enterprise, bank details, activity of the unit and number of persons employed.

 

Step 7: Review all the details, click the Submit button and get the final OTP.

As of February 2025, registering a Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise in India is free of charge. The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises provides an online registration process through the Udyam Registration portal, which does not require any fees.
