Chipboard screws are specially made screws for particle boards, chipboards, MDF and other engineered wood. They have coarse threads and a self-tapping tip. This helps them bite into soft wood properly. Most have a cross-recessed head so the screw sits flush or just slightly under the surface.

These screws are used in furniture, cabinets, shelves, wardrobes, cupboards basically all interior wood projects. If you use wrong screws, panels can split, joints come loose, furniture wobbles or falls apart. Not good.

In India the BIS standard IS 18508:2024 tells exactly how these screws should be. It covers dimensions, material, mechanical strength, coatings, marking and packaging. This ensures screws are strong, safe and reliable.

Why BIS Certification is Needed

Since 2024 BIS certification is mandatory for chipboard screws. The government issued a Quality Control Order (QCO) to enforce this

  • Every screw sold in India must carry the ISI mark
  • Rule applies to manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, retailers.
  • Selling uncertified screws is illegal, can lead to fines, product seizure, or legal action.

The ISI mark acts like a quality seal. It tells buyers the screws are tested and meet Indian safety standards. Furniture makers, carpenters, retailers can rely on it

Key Rules in IS 18508:2024

The standard mentions several important requirements:

  • Material & Coating: Steel or other approved metals should be used as screws. Corrosion is prevented by anti-rust coating, such as zinc or nickel.
  • Thread Design: Coarse threads to achieve better grip in the chipboard or particle boards.
  • Screw Head: This should be cross-referenced and should be in contact with surface or slightly below.
  • Mechanical Strength: Screws were tested on tensile strength, torque resistance, pull-out strength and holding power
  • Marking & Packaging: Pack must indicate screw type, size, batch number, name of manufacturer and ISI mark

These rules make sure screws are durable, strong, safe to use in furniture and interiors.

Who Needs BIS Certification.

BIS rules apply to:

  • Manufacturers producing screws for sale in India.
  • Importers bringing screws for commercial distribution.
  • Wholesalers and retailers selling chipboard screws.

Some exceptions exist:

  • Screws made only for export.
  • Screws that are part of finished products (not sold separately).
  • Small R&D imports for internal testing only.

Even if exempt, once screws are sold in India, certification is mandatory.

How to Get BIS Certification

The process is simple but strict:

  1. Apply to BIS: Provide documentation on screws and raw material documentation, manufacturing procedures.
  2. Inspection of the factories: BIS officials have the right to come to your factory and inspect the production and quality systems.
  3. Sample Testing: Screws are known to be tested in approved BIS labs on the basis of mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, thread quality.
  4. Grant of license: Once you pass tests, BIS grants a license to utilize ISI mark.
  5. Continuing Compliance: Manufacturers will be required to keep record, observe quality and only sell certified screws.

Some manufacturers hire consultants or labs to speed up the process. But final responsibility is always on the company.

Extra Things in IS 18508:2024.

  • Screw Sizes: Determines length, diameter and thread pitch of different screws. Assures compatibility with chipboards and particle boards.
  • Corrosion Test: The screws are put to test in the salt spray chambers. Rust resistance should be ensured using coats.
  • Mechanical Tests: Torque, tensile, pull-out strength, which are tested to require screws not to split wood.
  • Packaging Regulations: Should include the batch number, type, size, manufacturer, ISI mark which can be traced.

Using uncertified screws may save money at first. But broken furniture costs more. Also, it can damage your reputation if you sell furniture with failed joints

Common Misconceptions

  • Small screws don’t need certification? Wrong. All screws sold in India must have BIS certification
