Agricultural exports are one of India's biggest commercial opportunities right now. The country ships fruits, vegetables, rice, meat, dairy, honey, spices and dozens of processed food products to over 190 countries. But not every business that wants to export can just start shipping. Products listed under the APEDA Act require a specific registration before any export can happen legally and that registration is what this guide explains
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority was set up in December 1985 under an Act of Parliament. It works under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and exists specifically to help Indian exporters reach international markets. When you register APEDA issues you a Registration-Cum-Membership Certificate RCMC which is the document that proves you're authorised to export scheduled food products from India
The APEDA Act specifies a list of "scheduled products" items that fall under APEDA's regulatory scope. If your export business deals with any of them registration is not a choice
The scheduled product categories cover a wide range: fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, dairy, cereals and more
That's a broad list. Even a small home-grown organic snack brand exporting to the UAE needs APEDA registration for exporters before the first shipment leaves
One practical rule most new exporters overlook: you must apply within one month of starting your export business
APEDA Chennai Registration Process , Documents and Fees
Any Indian entity exporting scheduled products is eligible to apply. These include individual exporters, proprietorship, partnership firms, private and public limited companies, cooperative societies, Farmer Producer Organisations and even companies providing warehousing or cold storage exclusively for perishable export goods
The only non-negotiable requirement is a valid Import-Export Code from Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Without it you won’t be able to proceed on the APEDA portal. This is the step before this one if you don't have an IEC yet
Getting documents in order before starting the APEDA registration online application matters more than it seems. APEDA's portal doesn't save incomplete applications indefinitely, and uploading the wrong file type or a blurred scan means resubmission which pushes your timeline back

The government fee for APEDA registration fees 2026 is ₹5,000 excluding taxes. With 18% GST applied the total government charge comes to approximately ₹5,900. Any professional or consultancy fee if you use a service provider is charged separately and isn't set by APEDA
Payment goes through the portal using credit card, debit card, net banking, or a demand draft made out to "APEDA" payable at your city. After payment the portal generates an application number. That number is what you'll use to track progress
The APEDA registration certificate your RCMC is valid for five years. Renewal requires only the renewal fee, no new documents, no fresh application and no re-inspection
Everything runs through apeda.gov.in. There's no physical submission involved.
Start at the "Register as Member" tab on the portal homepage. Enter your IEC code, email ID and mobile number. An OTP arrives on both for verification. Once verified you access the full application form
Fill in your business details. company name, registered address, products you plan to export and your bank account information. The form saves as you go so you can return to it before final submission. After completing the form, upload all documents from the checklist. File clarity matters here a low-resolution scan of a bank certificate will come back for correction
Pay the fee after uploads are complete. Once payment goes through, your application number is assigned. Track it at any time using the "Track Application" link enter your IEC code and application number to see where things stand
APEDA typically issues the RCMC within 10 to 15 days of a clean, complete submission. Login credentials arrive on your registered email. Download your APEDA registration certificate by logging in and going to "View RCMC Certificate."
The RCMC is more than a compliance document. It's the key to a range of programs that registered exporters can use and non-registered exporters simply can't.
The financial assistance schemes are probably the most commercially significant. Registered members can apply for APEDA grants covering infrastructure development, cold chain setup, packaging improvements and technology upgrades. These aren't small amounts for businesses that qualify
Trade fair access is another concrete benefit. APEDA regularly sends registered exporters to international buyer-seller meets and food trade exhibitions. A food brand that couldn't otherwise afford an international exhibition presence can attend as part of an APEDA delegation
Beyond events, APEDA runs brand promotion programs covering advertising, packaging development, and market database work for specific product categories. Registered exporters in those categories can apply for this support.
APEDA registration is the entry point for any serious agricultural food export business in India. The RCMC takes 10 to 15 days to come through with complete documents, costs around ₹5,900 in government fees, and stays valid for five years. What comes with it financial schemes, trade access, training, and market data makes it worth understanding properly before you start.
