If you're manufacturing or importing LED lights in India, a BIS certificate is mandatory. The Bureau of Indian Standards in short BIS regulates the quality and safety of electrical products, and under the Compulsory Registration Scheme or CRS, all LED lighting products must be registered on order sales in Indian market.
A BIS certificate is an Indian safety and quality certification issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards. For LED products, this certification ensures that the product complies with Indian safety standards under IS 16102 Part 1: 2012 for self-ballasted LED lamps and other relevant IS standards for various LED lighting equipment.
As per CRS, the following LED products must be BIS certified:
Refer to the specific IS standards for your LED product. Most LED bulbs fall under IS 16102 (Part 1):2012. For other types, standards vary.
Foreign manufacturers must appoint an Indian representative to act as the local contact point for BIS.
You must submit samples of your LED products to a BIS-approved lab for testing. The lab will conduct tests based on the applicable IS standard and issue a test report.
Register your product on the BIS CRS portal. Fill out the online form, upload the test reports, and submit other documents.
BIS charges include application fees, processing fees, and license fees. The total cost varies depending on the number of models and categories.
After submission of the application, BIS officials will review your application. If everything is in order, the BIS certificate is issued within 15–30 working days.
