The BIS certification scheme is voluntary in nature. However, for a number of products, compliance with Indian Standards is made compulsory by the Central Government. For such products, the Central Government directs mandatory use of the Standard Mark.

Step 1 Identify your Indian Standard (IS) code Every product category has a specific IS code. You must match your product to the correct one before anything else. Filing under the wrong standard is one of the most common causes of application rejection.
Step 2 Apply online through the BIS portal BIS accepts applications for product certification in online mode only. Separate applications are required for each product and IS code, even if produced at the same factory.
Step 3 Product testing in a BIS-recognised laboratory Your product samples must be tested at a BIS-accredited lab and must conform to the relevant Indian Standard Specification. Lab queues can cause delays plan well in advance.
Step 4 Factory inspection by BIS officers After the grant of a licence, BIS can conduct surprise factory surveillance inspections to verify that the manufacturer continues to maintain manufacturing infrastructure, process controls, quality control, and testing formalities and the conformity of the product to the applicable Indian Standard.
Step 5 Licence grant and ISI marking Once testing and inspection are cleared, BIS grants a CM/L licence number. This number, combined with the ISI mark, must appear on every unit of your product going forward.
Step 6 Renewal Renew the ISI licence every two years with updated documents. Maintain quality testing records and batch traceability and cooperate with BIS surveillance inspections.
