India's electronics import market has been growing fast. Bluetooth speakers, wireless earbuds, smart home devices, drones, RFID scanners, Wi-Fi routers these products are flying off shelves and more importers are bringing them in every year. But here's something that stops a lot of shipments at the border a missing WPC certificate for import
If your product uses wireless technology and you're importing it into India you need approval from the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing
Wireless Planning and Coordination is what WPC stands for. It was made in 1952. The Indian government runs it through the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The WPC is in charge of India's radio frequency spectrum
The WPC must approve any device that sends or receives wireless signals before you can bring it, sell it or use it in India. This includes any radio frequency. This rule is there to keep devices from getting in each other's way and to make sure that products are safe
WPC ETA Certificate: Registration Process!
WPC ETA full form is Equipment Type Approval. An ETA from WPC is the official certificate that says your wireless device has been tested and approved to operate in India's frequency bands
The WPC ETA is issued by the WPC Wing of the DoT. It stays valid for the lifetime of the product unless you change the product's wireless hardware or design. So you apply once per product model, not every year.
Not every electronic product needs a separate WPC approval. Here's a quick guide:

Several types of WPC license exist under the WPC framework. The one most importers need is the ETA but others may apply depending on your business model
Equipment Type Approval (ETA) is the most common. It applies to wireless devices operating on de-licensed frequency bands like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and RFID. Getting this is the first step for most importers
WPC import license is issued specifically for importing wireless products into India. Importers dealing with certain types of wireless equipment need this alongside the ETA
Dealer Possession Licence is for distributors and dealers who stock and sell wireless products commercially within India
Experimental Licence covers organizations doing research or testing with wireless devices
Before starting the WPC ETA online application gather these documents:
Company registration certificate
GST registration certificate
Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT
Authorized signatory's identity and address proof
Product technical specification sheet
RF (Radio Frequency) test report from an accredited laboratory
Letter of authorization required if you are representing a foreign manufacturer as their Indian agent
Getting WPC ETA approval follows a clear sequence. Here is how it works:
Confirm your product needs ETA. Check whether your product uses de-licensed radio frequencies. If yes proceed
Get your product tested. Send your product to an NABL-accredited Indian lab or an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab overseas. The lab tests whether your product's wireless function stays within India's permitted frequency bands and meets safety standards
Appoint an Authorized Indian Representative if needed. Foreign companies cannot directly apply for a WPC certificate in India. A WPC ETA certificate is issued to an Indian entity, not a foreign company
Register on Saral Sanchar Portal. The WPC ETA online application is submitted through saralsanchar.gov.in the DoT's online platform for wireless approvals.
Upload documents and pay government fees. Upload all required documents the test report, company registration, IEC, GST certificate, and authorization letter
Verification by WPC. WPC officials review the submitted documents and test report. If everything is in order, the WPC ETA certificate is issued digitally through the portal
Download your WPC certificate. Once approved, WPC ETA approval is issued online. Download the certificate from your Saral Sanchar account
Filing WPC License Online Application?
The RF test report is what proves your product won't interfere with other devices or networks operating in India. India has defined specific frequency bands for de-licensed use the bands where Bluetooth and Wi-Fi operate. Your product's transmissions must stay within these bands and within the permitted power levels
A test report from a non-accredited lab will be rejected. A report that doesn't include the required technical parameters frequency span, output power, bandwidth, signal characteristics will also be rejected.
Importing wireless devices into India without a valid WPC certificate is not a minor oversight. Customs officials are authorised to seize radio and wireless equipment at the border if WPC clearance is missing. The goods don't get released they get held until documentation is produced or in some cases, the shipment is returned or destroyed
WPC ETA certification is the licensing step that stands between your wireless product and the Indian market. It protects consumers, ensures your product won't cause interference and gives you legal standing to import and sell. The process testing, documentation, Saral Sanchar portal application is manageable when approached in the right order with the right documents from the start
