You can export edible oil from India by completing four essential registration steps first. You must register your business, obtain the necessary Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and secure a license from FSSAI for food safety. Finally you need the export membership certificate from APEDA or FIEO. The fastest way to export edible oil is by ensuring your oil meets strict international quality standards.
India exports many different oils each with its own market.
Coconut Oil: Both Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized (RBD) and Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) are popular. VCO sells for much higher prices in Western health food stores.
Groundnut (Peanut) Oil: Popular in Southeast Asia for traditional cooking. You must confirm that the oil is certified allergen-free for many Western buyers
Sesame Oil: Used widely in Asian cooking and traditional medicine. It is considered a premium oil
Mustard Oil: Mainly exported to Indian communities abroad. This is a very niche market.
2. Why Quality is Everything
Edible oil is a food product so quality is the most important thing
Contaminants: The oil must be free from any contaminants. It must have zero pesticide residue. It must pass all health safety tests.
Packaging: The oil must be packaged correctly to prevent it from going bad. Heat and light are bad for oil. You must use good quality, sealed containers .
3. Register Your Business and Get PAN
You must choose the legal structure of your company.
PAN is Vital: You must get a Permanent Account Number (PAN) in the company's name. This is your main tax identification number.
Export Bank Account: You must open a current bank account in the company name. You must tell the bank the account is for export business to handle foreign currency easily.
4. Obtain the Importer Exporter Code (IEC).
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is the single most important license.
Application: You apply for the IEC online through the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) website. This process is fully digital and easy to follow.
Requirement: You need the company PAN, your registered address proof, and bank account details. The IEC is valid for the entire life of your business, so you should check the details very carefully.
5. GST Registration for Tax Benefits
You must register your company for the Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Zero-Rated Exports: Exports from India are not taxed under the GST law. They are called Zero-Rated. You do not pay GST on the oil you sell outside the country.
Refunds: Having a valid GST registration allows you to get refunds. You get back the GST you paid on the raw materials (seeds, coconuts, or packaging) and the services used to prepare your shipment. This saves your company money.
6. FSSAI Licensing and Health Certificates.
As edible oil is a food item you must strictly follow the rules of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)
FSSAI License: You need a proper FSSAI license (for manufacturing or trading). This license is required to handle, process, or pack the oil legally in India.
Health Certificate: Many foreign markets, especially Europe and the Middle East, demand a Health Certificateor a Free Sale Certificate for your oil. This certificate proves that the oil is safe for people to eat.
7. RCMC: Choosing Your Council (APEDA is Key)
You must get your Registration-cum-Membership Certificate (RCMC) from the correct Export Promotion Council (EPC).
APEDA: Since edible oil is an agricultural and processed food product. The main EPC is the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Most edible oil exporters register with APEDA.
FIEO: If you export many different products that are not only food items (like both oil and leather goods), you can register with the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).
8. Logistics and Export Documentation
Getting the oil to the foreign port requires careful handling and paperwork. You must hire experts.
Freight Forwarder: Hire a good Freight Forwarder. This company handles all the physical movement of the oil. They book the shipping container. They handle transportation to the Indian port.
Customs Agent: You also need a Customs House Agent (CHA). The CHA manages the complex customs clearance at the Indian port. They check all your documents are correct before the ship leaves.
Final Papers: The Commercial Invoice, the Packing List, the Bill of Lading (BL) and the Certificate of Origin are the final documents. You must also include the Health Certificate and the RCMC copy. These papers are necessary for the buyer to clear the goods in their country.
Starting the edible oil export business means dealing with many government portals. You need to apply for the IEC, the FSSAI license and the APEDA RCMC. You must ensure all these documents especially the critical Health Certificate are obtained without any errors
