To get certified, makers must follow the rules, pass the tests and meet every condition laid down by BIS. But how does one start? What are the steps? And what should one keep in mind? This guide answers all of that
IS 6911 is a standard that defines the quality of stainless steel sheets, plates, and strips. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) made this code to keep the grade of stainless steel products in check. It lists rules for the chemical composition, mechanical traits, surface finish, flatness, and tolerance levels. The goal is simple—to make sure every piece of steel serves its function without risk.
This standard applies to steel used in building tools, kitchenware, auto parts, and machines. It also covers steel used in medical tools, food-grade equipment, and home appliances. Each product under this code must match the right grade like 304, 316, or 430. If not, the maker risks legal issues or product rejection.
BIS Certification is compulsory for stainless steel products as per the Indian Government under this standard. As per the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, no maker can sell or import products under IS 6911 without BIS approval. This ensure cheap or unsafe steel does not enter the market. For industries that rely on strength and hygiene, this rule saves time and avoids safety risks.
Also, BIS certification builds buyer trust. It proves that your steel meets Indian norms. This makes it easier to get bulk orders from government bodies and big buyers. If you skip this step, you may face penalties, bans, or lost clients.
BIS CRS Certificate Registration
This certification is for those who manufacture, import, or trade stainless steel sheets, strips, or plates. If you own a steel plant, run a fabrication unit, or export stainless steel, you must get certified. Even foreign manufacturers who wish to enter the Indian market must apply under the FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme).
If you are only a retailer or wholesaler, you don’t need to get BIS certified. But you can only sell BIS-marked steel. That means you must source from certified producers only.
To start the process, you will need some key papers. The list includes:

BIS Registration Process in India
Let’s break down the BIS Certification process for stainless steel under IS 6911 into simple steps:
First, you must fill the Form VI online on the BIS portal. You need to select the product code, plant address, and attach all the required documents. You must also pay the fees.
Once the application is accepted, BIS tells you to submit samples. They must be submitted to a BIS-approved lab. Tests are done for chemical makeup, hardness, corrosion resistance, and finish.
BIS then sends an officer to your unit. The officer checks your machines, test tools, staff, records, and raw materials. If the setup is weak, you are told to fix it before the next step.
If the officer finds everything fine and the test reports pass, BIS gives you the licence. You can now use the ISI mark on your steel products.
You must now follow the BIS marking rules. Each sheet or plate must have the ISI logo, licence number, and grade. The licence lasts for one year. You must renew it yearly, with updated test reports and audit records.
