When someone buys a bed, they want comfort. But they also expect it to be safe. The bed must not break under pressure. It must not injure someone. And it must last for many years. For this reason, the Indian government has brought standards to check bed quality and safety. One such standard is IS 17635:2022. It is created by the BIS. This standard applies to furniture beds that people use in homes, hotels, hospitals, and other places.
Beds are one of the most used furniture pieces. They carry human weight for hours each day. They support mattresses, bedsheets, storage drawers, and sometimes even electronic fittings. If the bed is weak, the risk of injury becomes high. Children may fall. Adults may get hurt. Or the frame may collapse. Because of such risks, the government made BIS certification mandatory for beds through a Quality Control Order (QCO).
If you are a manufacturer, seller, or importer of furniture beds, this article will guide you. It explains everything you need to know about the BIS certification process under IS 17635:2022 how it works, who needs it and how to stay compliant
These entities have to apply for BIS certification for beds:
There are two main certification types based on where the beds are made:
If the beds are made in India, they must be certified under the ISI mark scheme. The BIS team audits the unit and tests the samples.
If the beds are made outside India, BIS officers inspect the foreign factory under FMCS. The process is slightly longer and needs an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR). In both cases, the bed must meet all the requirements of IS 17635:2022. Only then can the product carry the ISI mark, which is the official BIS symbol of approval.
The standard has detailed rules on how a bed must be designed, made, and tested. These include:
1. Material Strength: Beds must be created of solid wood, steel, engineered wood, or durable composites. Materials must be safe and non-toxic.
2. Load-bearing Tests: The frame must handle daily loads, including jumping or sudden movement. It must not crack, bend, or break.
3. Joint and Fastener Quality: Nuts, bolts, welds, or adhesives must hold firmly. They should not loosen after long use.
4. Design Safety: Corners and edges must be rounded or protected. There must be no sharp surfaces or pinch points.
5. Storage Components: For beds with storage, drawers or compartments must be easy to operate and stable when pulled out.
6. Dimensions and Stability: The bed must not shake or tip during normal use. It must rest flat on the floor.
7. Finishing and Coating: Paints or laminates must be lead-free and smooth.
8. Marking and Instructions: Each certified product must display the ISI mark, standard number, usage guide, and manufacturer details.
To apply for BIS certification, you need to prepare these documents:
Foreign applicants must also submit:
If you're making or selling furniture beds in India, BIS certification under IS 17635:2022 is mandatory. It shows that your product is safe, reliable, and fit for the market. With this license, you avoid penalties, gain customer trust, and open up bigger opportunities.
