Why Hallmarking is Important for Gold Jewellery in India?

BIS Hallmark

India is among the largest consumers of gold in the world, and yet for decades a buyer had no reliable way to confirm that the 22-carat piece they paid for actually contained 22-carat gold. Consumer surveys documented the gap consistently. Jewellers denied it consistently. Without a mandatory verification system there was no way to resolve the dispute

That changed on June 16, 2021, when BIS hallmarking in India became compulsory. Today, every piece of hallmark gold sold in a notified district carries three independently verifiable marks, and any buyer with a smartphone can check those marks in under sixty seconds.

Why BIS Hallmark Registration is Essential for Gold and Silver Jewelry in India?

Benefits of BIS Hallmarking for Gold Jewellery

The benefits of gold hallmarking fall differently depending on which side of the counter you're on, but they're concrete either way.

If you're buying, your gold hallmark certification is a statutory protection. Section 49 of the Indian Standards Rules, 2018, gives you the right to compensation if a hallmarked piece tests at a lower purity than declared. The compensation is calculated at twice the monetary value of the purity shortfall, based on the weight of the article, plus laboratory testing charges. That's enforceable in law, not a goodwill gesture from the jeweller.

If you're a jeweller: BIS registration for gold jewellery puts your name in BIS's public database. When a buyer verifies any piece you've sold using the BIS Care App, your registered name appears in the result. Competitors without registration cannot replicate that visibility. Non-compliance also exposes you to consumer complaints filed directly through the same app, and those complaints trigger enforcement attention.

How to Check Gold Hallmark in India

Three marks must be present on any currently hallmarked piece. Check the piece itself, typically on an inconspicuous surface, laser-engraved or stamped.

The BIS logo: a triangle bearing the letters BIS, confirming the piece was certified through an officially recognized center.

The purity/fineness mark: expressed as carat and fineness together, 22K 916, 18K 750, 14K 585. The three-digit number is the fineness, meaning parts of pure gold per thousand. 22K916 tells you 916 out of every 1,000 parts by weight is gold

The HUID: a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification code, unique to each individual piece registered in BIS's central database at the moment of hallmarking

To verify, open the BIS Care app, select "Verify HUID," and enter the code. The app returns the name of the registered jeweler who submitted the piece, the assaying and hallmarking center that tested it, the certified purity grade, and the date of marking. A piece that returns no result or returns details that don't match what the seller told you is not genuinely certified

What Is Hallmark Gold and Why It Matters?

In simple terms: gold jewellery that has been independently tested and certified by a BIS-recognized assaying and hallmarking center with its purity permanently recorded and independently verifiable

Hallmark gold meaning goes beyond a stamp. Before the HUID system existed in 2021, a determined seller could theoretically put fake marks on untested metal and deny knowledge. The six-digit HUID made that impossible. Every HUID links the piece to a specific testing event at a specific center on a specific date submitted by a specific registered jeweller. That chain of traceability is what separates a genuine BIS hallmark from a copied symbol

The gold hallmark symbol, the triangle with BIS, the fineness number, and the HUID read together tell you not just what the metal claims to be but also who vouched for it and when. That's the difference that matters when something goes wrong and you need to make a legal claim

BIS Hallmarking Rules for Gold Jewellery in India?

Mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery covers all notified districts under a phased rollout: 256 districts from June 2021 and 32 more from April 2022 with ongoing expansion. The rules apply to hallmark jewellery across all covered carats: 9K, 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K gold

The 9K grade was added to the mandatory scheme from July 1, 2025, a significant addition because it brought budget-tier jewellery into the verified purity framework for the first time

From April 1, 2023, the HUID became mandatory on all newly hallmarked gold. The older four-mark system, which included the AHC code and year-of-marking letter instead of a HUID, was officially retired. Stock carrying the old format could not legally be sold as newly certified after March 31, 2023.

Exemptions are narrow and product-specific: gold articles under 2 grams, certain export-bound pieces, and jewellery for international customers. These are not seller-level exemptions. A small jeweller selling pieces above the weight threshold in a notified district has no exemption available.

How BIS Ensures Gold Quality in India

The Bureau of Indian Standards operates a network of recognized assaying and hallmarking centers across the country. These are not self-regulatory bodies; they're independently accredited under Indian Standard IS 15820:2009, which sets requirements for their equipment, processes, personnel qualifications, and quality management systems.

Have Questions? Let’s Talk. We’re Just One Click Away.

Every AHC uses two testing methods: XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis for non-destructive initial testing and fire assay for confirmatory precision testing. From 2025, BIS also mandated API integration between AHC testing equipment and the BIS central portal meaning every step of the hallmarking process, from weighing to laser marking the HUID, is reported digitally in real time. Paper-based gaps in the record are gone.

Importance of Gold Certification for Buyers in India

Gold purity certification in India gives you something that gold's long cultural history in this country never actually provided: a legal claim. Jewellery has always been bought and gifted on trust. Hallmarking makes that trust verifiable and, where it's violated, compensable.

The compensation mechanism under Section 49 of the Indian Standards Rules, 2018, is specific enough to matter commercially. If you buy a piece certified as 22K and it tests at 18K, the shortfall is calculated on actual weight and market rates. The compensation owed is twice that difference, plus testing fees.

Beyond compensation, gold hallmark certification is increasingly a prerequisite for resale. Jewellers buying back gold and banks accepting jewellery under loan schemes now verify hallmarking before setting prices.

Conclusion

The gold hallmark system in India has teeth now that it didn't have before 2021. The HUID made it traceable. Mandatory enforcement made it consequential. The BIS Care App made it accessible to anyone who can type six characters.

FAQs

What is gold hallmarking in India?

It's the official process by which a BIS-recognized assaying and hallmarking center tests a gold piece, certifies its purity, stamps three marks—the BIS logo, purity grade, and HUID—and registers the certification in BIS's national database. The result is a gold hallmark certification that any buyer can verify independently.

Why is hallmarking necessary for gold jewellery?

You cannot determine gold purity by looking at it or touching it. Sellers knew this for decades, and some exploited it. Without mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery, a buyer paying 22-carat prices for 18-carat metal had no recourse. The current system creates both a verifiable standard and a compensation mechanism when that standard is violated.

How do I identify BIS hallmark gold?

Three marks: the BIS triangle logo, a carat-fineness mark like 22K916, and a six-digit HUID. Verify the HUID on the BIS Care App. A piece with only four older marks and no HUID doesn't meet current requirements and cannot be legally sold as newly certified stock.

Is hallmark gold compulsory in India?

Yes, in all notified districts. The BIS Act, 2016, makes selling non-hallmarked gold jewellery a punishable offense with penalties up to five times the article's cost. Exemptions exist for pieces under 2 grams and certain export categories, but not for sellers based on business size.

What are the benefits of Hallmark Gold?

A buyer purchasing hallmark jewellery has legal recourse if the certified purity turns out to be false compensation under Section 49 of the Indian Standards Rules, 2018, equal to twice the value of the purity shortfall. The benefits of gold hallmarking for sellers are equally concrete: legal compliance, database visibility, and consumer trust that unregistered competitors cannot offer.

How do I verify gold purity in India?

Enter the HUID from the piece into the BIS Care App under "Verify HUID." This pulls up the jeweller, testing center, purity grade, and marking date from BIS's database. Alternatively, take the piece to any BIS-recognized AHC for independent laboratory testing; they'll issue a formal assay report with exact purity findings.
