Getting certified for the Indian market has never been straightforward. There is the documentation, the lab testing, the waiting. But here is something that is actually going to make that process a bit smoother the Bureau of Indian Standards is moving everything online.
From June 1, 2026, all foreign manufacturers must file their BIS registration applications through the official online portal only. Hard copies will not be accepted after May 31, 2026. That is not a suggestion it is a firm deadline.
If you have been submitting physical applications so far, this change affects you directly. And the sooner you act, the better.
If you are a foreign manufacturer selling regulated products in India, your BIS registration application must go through the portal from June 1. That is true whether you are applying fresh, renewing, or resubmitting something that got rejected.
The Indian standard bureau has been pushing toward digital compliance for a while now. This deadline makes it mandatory.
Here is the short version of what changes:

After June 1, 2026 |

Mainly foreign manufacturers. If your factory is outside India and you sell products here or plan to this update is for you.
It also affects:
Importers managing applications on behalf of overseas factories
Anyone applying under the CRS BIS scheme for electronics
Agents and BIS registration consultants who submit on clients' behalf
Domestic Indian manufacturers are not covered by this particular change. But if your supply chain involves a foreign entity seeking a BIS license or BIS certificate, get that entity registered on the portal now.
It is not complicated once you are set up. Here is the basic flow for the BIS certification process:
Register on manakonline.in
Pick your scheme electronics goes under BIS CRS
Appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)
Upload your documents and fill the application
Pay government fees online
Await review inspection may be required
Get your BIS certificate once approved
Your AIR matters a lot here. They are your official contact point in India and must be registered on the portal separately. Without a valid AIR, your application will not move forward whether online or offline.
Missing documents cause most delays. Pull these together before you start:
|
Document |
Note |
|
Product test reports |
Must be from a BIS-recognized lab |
|
AIR authorization letter |
Signed by the foreign manufacturer |
|
Factory details |
Address, capacity, official letterhead |
|
Brand or trademark proof |
Registration certificate or license |
|
Quality system records |
ISO 9001 or equivalent |
Everything must be in English. Non-English documents need official translation first
The BIS certification product list under CRS BIS is long. Common categories include smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, chargers, LED bulbs, power banks and wearables. The BIS certification for electronic products is not optional for these selling or importing without a valid Bureau of Indian Standards registration can get your goods held at customs or seized outright.
If you are unsure whether your product falls under Indian Standards, check the BIS certification procedure on the official portal or speak with a BIS consultant before assuming you are exempt.
Do not wait for the last week. Here is what needs to happen:
Check if your current applications are going through offline channels. Switch immediately if they are.
Register on manakonline.in if you have not done so.
Confirm your AIR is active and also registered on the portal.
Digitize your documents scanned, clearly legible, properly named.
Push any pending offline applications to completion before May 31.
One more thing. The BIS Bureau of Indian Standards has been tightening enforcement on non-compliant products. A valid BIS Indian standard mark tells customs and buyers alike that your product meets BIS Standards. Without it, the consequences are not just administrative they affect your ability to do business in India at all.
The deadline is firm and the portal is ready. Getting your BIS certificate registration sorted through the online system is straightforward if you start now it gets messy when everyone rushes in the final days of May.
Agile Regulatory has helped foreign manufacturers navigate the BIS certification procedure across the CRS BIS scheme and broader Indian BIS frameworks. If you need support with the online transition, reach out before the backlog builds
If BIS received and acknowledged it before May 31, it should continue to be processed. But do not assume. Check your application status through your AIR or on the portal. Any fresh submission or resubmission after June 1 must go online no exceptions have been announced
You need an Authorized Indian Representative based in India. The BIS certification for electronic products and most other schemes require an AIR regardless of whether you are filing online or offline. You can prepare documents from your country, but your AIR handles the actual submission and all BIS correspondence within India.
